The C. D. Narasimhaiah Prize


The C. D. Narasimhaiah Prize was instituted in 2006 by the Indian Association for Commonwealth Literature and Language Studies (IACLALS) in memory of the founding Chairperson of IACLALS, Professor C. D. Narasimhaiah who headed the Association from 1974 to 1993.  Professor Narasimhaiah taught English at Maharaja College in Mysore before serving as its Principal. He was a Fulbright Visiting Professor at Yale University, and Visiting Professor at the University of Queensland. He was resident scholar at the International Research Centre, Bellagio. He believed in promoting studies on Indian art and culture and co-founded the Dhvanyaloka Centre for Indian Studies in his efforts to realize this. His contributions were recognized through several literary and civilian honours: the Rajyotsava Prashasti honour by the Government of Karnataka in 1987, and third highest civilian honour, the Padma Bhushan, by The Government of India in 1990, for his contributions to literature, to name a few.

The C. D. Narasimhaiah Prize is awarded for the Best Paper presented at the IACLALS Annual Conference. It comprises a certificate and a sum of Rs.5000/.
 
Preparing the Shortlist: The papers received for the contest are coded and sent for blind review and evaluation to 2 experts.
 
Presentation: The short-listed papers are presented orally in a dedicated session at the IACLALS Annual Conference, before another panel of judges.
 
The scores obtained in both the processes are added to select the winner.
 
The contestants may pay attention to the following:
 
a)      Introduction – thesis statement/presentation of the central argument.
b)    Development of the argument(s) – logic and empiricism/ whether textual/other evidence has been presented rationally and persuasively.
c)      Originality of the argument, and contribution to knowledge and learning/fresh or newer perspectives.
d)     A well-rounded conclusion.
e)      Felicity of language, overall lucidly, concision.
f)      Citation– consistent style sheet, in-text citations, footnotes and a list of works cited.
g)     Title of the paper– aptness, imagination, originality.
