The Meenakshi Mukherjee Memorial Prize
The Meenakshi Mukherjee Memorial Prize was instituted in 2011 in the memory of the second Chairperson of the IACLALS, Prof. Meenakshi Mukherjee (1993-2005). She taught English literature and Critical theory at a number of colleges in Patna, Pune, Delhi and the University of Hyderabad. Her last and longest spell was as Professor of English in the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. She was a visiting professor in several universities outside India, including the University of Texas at Austin, the University of Chicago, the University of California at Berkeley, Macquarie University (Sydney), the University of Canberra and Flinders University (Adelaide).
The MMM Prize is awarded for the Best Paper published by a member(s) of the IACLALS during the block of previous two years. The prize now carries a certificate with citations, and a sum of Rs. 10,000. At the time of its institution, the prize carried the sum of Rs. 5000 with a certificate. IACLALS provides single return airfare (Domestic) to the awardee, to join the annual conference at the time of the award. In case of joint awardees, all the privileges, extended to the awardee [prize money, single return airfare (domestic)] shall to be shared equally between the authors.
Guidelines for The Meenakshi Mukherjee Memorial Prize
1. An article published in a journal or a chapter included in a published book may be entered for the prize. Both online and print publications shall be acceptable. Whole books by an author(s) will not be eligible.
2. Along with the submission, candidates will need to submit the title page and contents page, and complete publication data in the case of online journals.
3. All Published papers being submitted for the MMM Prize, in addition to the scanned document from the parent print publication, should be accompanied by their pdf/word file to facilitate plagiarism check and other processes. Both PDF and Word files of the paper need to be submitted along with a self-declaration by the authors regarding both files being identical papers, and plagiarism-free.
4. Candidates competing for the prize must have been members: both at the time of publication of their work, and at the time of submitting their entry for the prize.
5. Co-authored papers: In case of co-authored papers, all the authors should jointly apply for nomination through a signed application. They should have been members at the time of publication of papers and at the time of the award. All privileges extended to the awardee [prize money, single return airfare (domestic)] will be shared equally between the authors.
6. The submission should make some original/fresh contribution to the existing corpus of knowledge -- theoretical, textual or interpretive.
7. IACLALS will conduct an independent plagiarism check before sending the papers for review.
8. Minimum word limit for a submitted article is 3500 words, excluding citations.
9. One member can submit only one nomination. In the covering mail, members will need to clearly declare their membership status. There is no (other) entry fee.
10. Earlier awardees will be able to apply for the nomination only after a gap of 3 years from the year of the award.

IACLALS is delighted to announce that the prestigious Meenakshi Mukherjee Memorial prize, 2023 edition has gone to Meghal Karki for her article 'The changing cityscape of Delhi: A study of the protest art and the site at Jamia Millia Islamia and Shaheen Bagh', published in the journal, Educational Theory and Philosophy (Routledge: Taylor & Francis), on 17th May 2022 .Meghal scored a total of 229 out of 300. Heartiest Congratulations to Meghal!
Meghal is studying for her Ph.D. at the School of Letters, Ambedkar University. Earlier, she has completed her B.A. from Delhi University and M.A. from Jamia Millia Islamia.
The prize was keenly contested among twenty contenders considered eligible for it. The second front runner was A K Muneer who scored 221 for his article entitled ‘Towards a Vernacular Globalectics:“Minor” illustrations from south India”’ published in South Asian Review (Routledge: Taylor & Francis, 2022). And close behind was Vaibhav Iype Parel for his article entitled ‘Framing Selves: Home, Gender, and Politics in the poetry of Imtiaz Dharker’ published in Ariel: A Review of International English Literature (Volume 53, Number 4). Parel scored 220. Heartiest congratulations to all the participants for their invaluable contributions that made the competition so vibrant and set such a difficult task for the jury!
The distinguished jury comprised Professor Fakrul Alam, formerly with the University of Dhaka, academic, literary critic and editor; Prof RajivaVerma, former Professor at the University of Delhi and a well-known Shakespeare critic; and Prof Meena T Pillai, University of Kerala and former visiting Fulbright professor at the University of California, Los Angeles. The IACLALS Executive thanks the esteemed jury members for their painstaking and thorough evaluation of each entry. The moderator for the prize was Prof Swati Pal, Vice Chair, IACLALS.

The prize was keenly contested between the seventeen contenders considered eligible for the prize. While the difference of marks awarded between the winner and the rest was considerable, the difference of marks between Natasa Thoudam for her article Divisive Politics of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in Three Stories from Manipur in India’s North East ( South Asia : Journal of South Asian Studies, Taylor & Francis online, 2021) and Sutapa Dutta for Packing a Punch at the Bengali Babu ( South Asia: Journal of South Asian Studies , Routledge, Taylor & Francis, 2021), the second and third highest scorers, was 4 marks. Similarly, there was a difference of 4 marks between Sutapa Dutta and the fourth highest scorer, Shailendra Singh for his article Premchand’s Shifting Portrayals of Womanhood in Colonial North India: Between Conformity and resistance (Contributions to India Sociology, Sage Publications, 2020). Congratulations to all of them! They all deserve great appreciation.
